Bishop: no delay dealing with sex abuse allegation

IRELAND
The Sligo Champion

By Leo Gray

Bishop Jones told The Sligo Champion he asked the priest at the centre of the allegations to stand aside as soon as there was sufficient information on the matter available to him.

He said a priest would be asked to stand aside when there was 'reasonable suspicion of abuse' against him but this did not apply in the first statement made to the Diocese of Elphin concerning the priest who served in Los Angeles between 1957 and 1965.

Identity not given

Bishop Jones confirmed that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles contacted him by letter of September 18th, 2002, advising that an allegation of 'inappropriate conduct with a minor' had been directed against a priest of the Elphin diocese who had served in LA

He stressed that no further detail of the complaint was provided and the identity of the complainant was not given.
