A prominent Catholic advisory group has tapped two New York colleges to spearhead a $3 million study on sexual abuse of children by priests.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Fordham University have been asked by theAbuse Tracker Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to team up to examine the roots of the pedophilia crisis.

The board said it wants to "more fully understand the problem" and improve the church's response.

John Jay College President Jeremy Travis called the study "enormously important" and vowed the school was up to the task.
