A county Sligo priest has stood aside at the weekend pending an investigation into alleged serious incidents in the 1960s.
Sixteen complaints of child abuse have been lodged against nine priests in the Diocese of Elphin which has the fourth highest number of complaints in the country.
Complaints were filed in the US against a priest with the same name as the Sligo clergyman who is now being investigated.
A spokesperson at the Diocese of Elphin yesterday (Monday) said he was not able to confirm that the priest who has stood down is the same clergyman.
In a statement, Elphin Bishop Bishop Christy Jones urged victims to come forward with “your story”.
