How much has the Diocese of Scranton spent as a result of accusations of sexual misconduct by priests? As a private entity, the diocese has no legal obligation to release figures, so it’s hard to say. But the minimum hovers around $700,000 since the early 1970s.
In a wide-ranging interview with the Times Leader in May 2002, then-Bishop James Timlin said the diocese had spent about $500,000 for victims of priest misconduct in three decades.
That doesn’t include $200,000 the diocese agreed to pay as part of a larger settlement of a civil lawsuit accusing two priests of misconduct with a minor in the late 1990s. The alleged misconduct began at St. Gregory’s Academy in Elmhurst.
The victim, identified only as John Doe in court papers, had sued Timlin, the diocese, the Society of St. John, the academy, and the group that runs the academy and the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. Combined, the parties agreed to pay $454,550 to settle the 3-year-old case.
