FORMER Workington priest Father Piers Grant Ferris will face crown court trial on 16 charges of indecent assault.

He appeared before magistrates in Scarborough last Friday and was sent to York Crown Court.

He will appear there on May 16. The charges relate to a period when he was a teacher at a private school for boys aged seven to 13 near York more than 30 years ago.

Fr Grant Ferris, 71, served at Workington’s Our Lady and St Michael’s Church between 1978 and 1989. He is now a monk at Ampleforth Abbey.
