The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis revealed Thursday that one new alleged perpetrator of child sex abuse was identified during the most recent year surveyed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Eighteen new victims came forward to the archdiocese in the 14 months ending in August, the bishops' auditing firm reported two weeks ago. Although the archdiocese previously said no new alleged perpetrators had been identified, a spokesman said one was discovered upon further review.

That priest died in 1971, and the alleged abuse occurred 40 years ago, said archdiocese spokesman Dennis McGrath. The archdiocese does not identify alleged perpetrators who are deceased, McGrath said.

"We will identify perpetrators who are still in active ministry, if anyone comes forward,'' he said.

A local victims support group wants any alleged perpetrator to be publicly identified, along with a work history listing their assignments.
