The Catholic Diocese of San Angelo has received high marks for its compliance with the bishops' charter to protect children, Bishop Michael Pfeifer announced Friday.
Pfeifer said the results of an audit, conducted last fall by the Gavin Group of Boston, should go a long way toward restoring public trust after the sex abuse scandal that rocked the church in 2002.
The Gavin Group conducted 194 audits, including a September review of the San Angelo diocese, and concluded that 96 percent of the nation's dioceses are compliant.
''I'm very pleased because it represents the hard work of many, many people in our diocese that have taken very seriously the call the bishops made three years ago,'' Pfeifer said.
