The case of Mario Napoleón Sasso is an awfully good example of the poor handling by the Catholic Church of a pedophile priest. Sasso had been transferred from San Juan for allegations and “interned” at a center for priests with problems, the now closed Domus Maria, although he didn’t receive medical treatment. It was recommended that he not have contact with children. But he was then put in charge of a community soup kitchen full of children. And there he re-offended. After that episode, in December, 2003, the then bishop Rafael Rey, who was to “receive” the condemned Sasso, proposed to create a “truly professional center” for priests with problems. It never happened. In May of this year, the new bishop of Campana, Oscar Sarlinga, issued an internal regulation that prohibited the transfer of priests who’d been accused of abuse.
