State Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday, Dec. 15, released a report detailing allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct at the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

The report showed that 51 priests in the Grand Rapids Diocese were accused of sexual misconduct involving children or adults since Jan. 1, 1950.

No criminal charges have been filed related to the Grand Rapids Diocese. In some cases, the statute of limitations has expired. In others, the allegations did not violate state law or the priest has died, Nessel said in a statement.

Charges have been filed in 11 cases across the state, resulting in convictions in nine cases involving 38 survivors, Nessel said.

Of the 11 cases charged criminally, none of the cases were related to priests ministering in the Diocese…

Federal authorities described the disgraced pastor’s actions as “predatory, measured, and inflicted profound trauma to the victim.”

A disgraced South Carolina pastor was indicted this week and accused of harassing his estranged wife for more than a year before she died by suicide in 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of South Carolina announced Thursday.

“The defendant’s alleged actions were predatory, measured, and inflicted profound trauma to the victim, her family, and loved ones,” FBI Agent in Charge Kevin Moore told local news station WMBF.

John Paul Miller, 46, was indicted on charges of cyberstalking and false statements after federal authorities said he began sending “unwanted and harassing communications” to his wife, Mica Miller, 30, in November 2022 and committed a string of “harassing behavior” up until her suicide on April 27, 2024.

Pope Leo XIV has accepted Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s resignation after 16 years of leading the Archdiocese of New York and announced Bishop Ron Hicks, 58, of Joliet, Illinois, to be his successor.

Hicks, hailing from the same state as the first-ever elected U.S.-born Pope, will soon step into one of the largest and most public-facing roles in the American Catholic Church, as the second-largest Archdiocese in the country.

Hicks has been the leader of the Church in Joliet, seat of Will County in Illinois, since2020. He previously served as an auxiliary bishop, or deputy, under Chicago’s Cardinal Blase Cupich.

“Hicks represents not just a new chapter for New York but for the American church as a whole,” said David Gibson, a U.S. Church expert.

The Archdiocese of New York says it has agreed to sell the land beneath the Palace Hotel on Manhattan’s East Side to the hotel owner for $490 million — part of a real estate haul meant to fund a global settlement for church sex abuse survivors.

The deal became public just days after Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced the archdiocese would establish a $300 million fund to compensate survivors of sexual abuse as it seeks to negotiate a settlement with more than 1,000 people who allege they were abused as minors by priests and other church officials.

“The sexual abuse of minors long ago has brought shame upon our Church,” Dolan said in a letter to parishioners, adding the church was now looking to “provide the maximum amount of compensation to the greatest number of victim-survivors, and help them heal and move forward.”

A recent Michigan Attorney General’s Office report released this month detailing allegations of clerical sexual abuse and misconduct taking place within the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids also includes ties to Manistee. 

The Dec. 12 report includes allegations against two former priests with ties to Manistee. 

The investigation did not reveal any allegations of the sexual abuse of a minor regarding priests in active ministry and there have been no criminal charges resulting from the investigation.   

The 335-page document details reported abuse of 152 victim-survivors by 51 priests since 1950.   

Two of those priests had connections with Manistee.

A Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to animal abuse and was supposed to be reassigned to Shreveport will no longer be taking the position.

The priest, Charles Thessing, who pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges, was set to be assigned to Shreveport’s diocese.

Thessing’s charges originated in West Memphis, Ark. earlier in 2025. His sentencing agreement shows he was ordered to pay more than $2,000 to the West Memphis Animal Shelter, along with a fine and court costs.

In response, the Catholic Diocese of Shreveport has put out a statement from the Bishop’s office:

The Michigan government this week released its fifth report on diocesan abuse in the state, detailing dozens of allegations against more than 50 priests in the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

The report from the attorney general’s office, released on Dec. 15, comes after four other reports detailing abuse allegations in the dioceses of Lansing, Kalamazoo, Gaylord, and Marquette.

As with the other reports, the allegations detailed in the Grand Rapids investigation go back decades. The Dec. 15 report encompasses abuse allegations against “priests or deacons who are current or former clergy for the Diocese of Grand Rapids, that occurred in the diocese from Jan. 1, 1950, to the present,” the review says.

Father Leo Riley, a Port Charlotte priest who was facing sexual abuse allegations and a lawsuit, died on Tuesday at 69, the Diocese of Venice announced.

The Diocese of Venice confirmed Father Riley’s death in a statement, but did not have any details on how he died or funeral arrangements.

Riley was previously arrested in April 2024 on capital sexual battery charges following reports of four people being sexually abused by Father Riley from 1984 to 1986, when he was the associate pastor of Resurrection Parish in Dubuque, Iowa.

In October 2024, three men filed a civil lawsuit in Charlotte County against Riley and the Diocese of Dubuque, alleging sexual abuse by Riley in Iowa.

Punta Gorda FL — Father Leo Riley, formerly of Dubuque, passed away in Punta Gorda, Florida on December 16 at the age of 69, according to the Archdiocese of Venice in Florida. Riley’s death comes after allegations of sexual abuse in Dubuque from the 1980s.

Riley was charged with five counts of second-degree sexual abuse in April of 2024. Four individuals came forward with allegations against Riley, who served as an associate pastor for the Church of Resurrection Parish in Dubuque at the time. The victims were all identified as grade school-aged boys.

The case was dismissed because the statute of limitations had expired.

Then in October 2024, three civil lawsuits were filed in Florida court against Riley and the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Riley denied the allegations against him.

A former Dubuque priest accused of sexually abusing altar boys has died at 69 years old.

Father Leo Riley was the associate pastor of Resurrection Parish in Dubuque from 1984 to 1986. He was serving as the priest of a church in Florida from 2005 until last year.

In October 2024, three men filed civil lawsuits against Riley, accusing him of sexual abuse. The lawsuits allege Riley sexually abused the men when they served as altar boys at the Dubuque church.

A similar case against Riley was dropped in Iowa due to the statute of limitations expiring.

A suggestion of death has been filed in both Sarasota and Charlotte counties in Florida. Funeral arrangements have not been confirmed at this time.

A former Dubuque priest at the center of sexual abuse lawsuits has died – and now, an alleged victim is speaking out.

Father Leo Riley died Dec. 16 in Punta Gorda, Florida at the age of 69.

Fr. Riley was the associate pastor of Resurrection Catholic Church in Dubuque from 1984 to 1986.

He served at various churches in Florida from 2002 until 2023.

In July 2024, a judge dismissed sexual battery charges against Riley, here in Iowa, due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

The newly named leader of the Archdiocese of New York, Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks, introduced himself to the faithful of his new home Dec. 18 with a pledge to become familiar with its challenges and uphold human dignity.

He also highlighted his Chicago-area background, which is similar to Pope Leo XIV’s.

In a joint press conference aired live on several national broadcast networks, New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan introduced the former bishop of Joliet, Illinois, saying it has been a week since he came to know the 58-year-old “and I already love him and appreciate him and trust him.”

 A Western New York woman who says she was sexually abused by a Roman Catholic priest decades ago is finally ready to tell her story in court as part of the Diocese of Buffalo’s bankruptcy proceedings.

Ann Fossler, now living in Pennsylvania, is among nearly 900 Child Victims Act cases filed against the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo. She says she was sexually abused by Monsignor John Ryan from about age 7 to 10 during the late 1950s.

“Because I was so young when my abuse occurred, I really didn’t have a childhood,” Fossler said, tearing up. “I lost my innocence quite early, and it has colored the rest of my life.”

For over 20 years, Ann Fossler stayed silent about sexual abuse she experienced from a Buffalo Diocese Catholic priest. Now, she is committed to telling her story.

Fossler was a parishioner of Queen of Heaven Church in West Seneca back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She said from the ages of 6 to 10, she was sexually abused by Monsignor John M. Ryan, a former superintendent of Catholic schools for the Buffalo Diocese.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel released a comprehensive report detailing allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct within the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

It spans 336 pages, through 51 priests and dates back over seven decades, despite resulting in zero convictions of sexual abuse related to the report.

Of the 51 priests listed in the report, 37 of them are known or presumed to be dead. The AG’s report stated that the 14 people who are living or assumed to be alive are not currently active in ministry within the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

The archdiocese will sell the land of the luxury hotel for a $490 million settlement fund.

Amid the Archdiocese of New York’s negotiations relating to approximately 1,300 instances of alleged child sex abuse, the archdiocese said that it will sell the land of the Lotte New York Palace hotel for $490 million to service a settlement fund.

As reported by the Gothamist, the archdiocese, which has an extensive property portfolio, will sell the land to cover the $300 million it has agreed to set aside for people who have accused priests and other church staff of sexual abuse.

Not all of the money from the sale will go to the fund, however, as some of the money will pay off loans that the archdiocese took out for previous settlements.

No criminal charges have been issued in connection with the report’s findings.

The 336-page report, released Monday morning, was made public to “acknowledge the reports of abuse from victims and to report the Department’s findings,” according to Nessel’s office. This is the fifth of what will eventually be seven reports detailing sexual assault allegations involving Catholic priests at the six Dioceses and the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office has issued the fifth of what will eventually be seven detailed reports on the topic of Catholic church clergy abuse in the state, this time focusing on the Diocese of Grand Rapids. 

The report, released Monday, is a compilation of allegations of sexual misconduct against either children or adults since 1950 in that region. The most recent report, issued in December 2024, looked into investigations at the Diocese of Lansing. The Saginaw and Detroit reports have yet to be released. 

The Most Reverend David John Walkowiak, who was named bishop of the Grand Rapids diocese in 2013, also gave a video statement and a press conference Monday to discuss the report.

A 300-page report released by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel Monday details accusations of sexual misconduct against both adults and children by Catholic clergy in the Grand Rapids area since 1950.

Of the 51 priests accused, 37 have died, and none of the remaining 14 is active in ministry in the diocese, said the attorney general’s office and the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

The report is the fifth in a seven-part series on allegations of abuse in each of the six Catholic dioceses in Michigan and the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Statewide, 11 cases of abuse by priests documented in the reports released so far have been charged criminally.

A St. Bernard parish jury on Thursday convicted a former pastor of one count of indecent behavior with juveniles, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said.

A former Mesquite teacher and coach has been arrested and charged with child grooming, police said on Wednesday.

Mesquite police said on Oct. 2, they received a report of an alleged child grooming case at the Christian Center of Mesquite on E. Cartwright Road. 

Through their investigation, the suspect was identified as 32-year-old Matthan Lough, of Crandall, police said. Mesquite police obtained a warrant, and Lough was arrested.

The Christian Center said in a statement that Lough was not an employee and it condemns “the criminal actions that led to his arrest.”

The center also confirmed that Matthan Lough is the adult son of its former senior pastor, Kevin Lough, who resigned on Nov. 23, 2025.

A Chalmette pastor arrested in 2023 for having sexual relations with multiple juveniles has been found guilty of related charges.

A jury in Chalmette found Milton Martin III, 56, guilty of indecent behavior with juveniles.

Louisiana State Police say an investigation that began in November 2022 found that Martin had sexual relations with a juvenile multiple times between 2010 and 2013, when the victim was between 14 and 17 years old. Based on the victim’s account, troopers obtained an arrest warrant in St. Bernard Parish.

Martin turned himself in on March 8, 2023, and was booked into the St. Bernard Parish Correctional Center on charges of felony sexual battery and carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

NEW YORK (WABC) — The Archdiocese of New York on Monday announced it will set up a $300 million fund to compensate victims of sexual abuse who have sued the church.

In a statement, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the archdiocese would pay for the fund by reducing its budget and selling off assets, including completing the sale of its former headquarters in Manhattan, with the goal that the fund “can be set aside to provide compensation to survivors of sexual abuse.”

The archdiocese has also agreed to engage retired Judge Daniel J. Buckley as a mediator between itself and victims to reach a settlement, Dolan said.

Buckley had a similar role in negotiations between the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and more than 1,000 people there.

Bishop Sarah Mullally, who will soon be seated as Archbishop of Canterbury, is accused of mishandling a safeguarding complaint against a priest of the Diocese of London in 2019, Lambeth Palace officials said on December 11.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One of three men arrested for sexual assault at a Jacksonville church has pleaded guilty three years after being arrested.

Jerome Teschendorf, 71, was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in the Florida State Prison system, to be followed by five years of probation.

Teschendorf pleaded guilty just under a week ago to one of the four counts of sexual battery against him, crossing out “because I am guilty” on the court document and writing in “best interest.”

He will also be designated a sexual predator, court documents show.

The New Orleans Archdiocese will pay at least $230 million to hundreds of survivors of clergy sexual abuse under a settlement approved by a federal judge on Monday.

The settlement follows years of negotiations and includes policies intended to prevent abuse from happening in the future. The archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in 2020 to avoid handling each of the more than 500 abuse claims separately.

Church of England authorities are considering a complaint against the incoming Archbishop of Canterbury over her handling of an abuse allegation.

The Right Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally, who is due to take office on January 28, has been accused of improperly handling a complaint against a priest in London, where she currently serves as bishop.

Lambeth Palace officials said the complaint was initially made in 2020, but was not followed up on due to “administrative errors and an incorrect assumption about the individual’s wishes”.

Dame Sarah was not informed of the complaint at the time, church authorities confirmed.

A palace spokesman said church authorities had written to the complainant — known as N — to outline the next steps.

A sprawling collection of discovery material now made public has unearthed explosive new details and previously unknown facts regarding the Southern Baptist Convention, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the sexual abuse allegations involving former professor David Sills and his former student, Jennifer Lyell.

The documents, stemming from Sills’ ongoing defamation lawsuit against the SBC and others, expose a staggering chasm between the supportive public statements made by key denominational leaders and the private doubts, skepticism and hostility expressed in internal communications regarding abuse allegations and the survivor community.

The Mattoon Police Department arrested the pastor of a local church for child pornography.

The Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office filed the Class X felony against 51-year-old Douglas R. Overmyer. Charging documents indicate that Overmyer shared a video of an underage girl and an adult male engaging in a sex act. The documents also indicate that Overmyer committed the offense “on or about May 20, 2025.”

A source familiar with the family confirmed with WCIA that Overmyer is involved with Zion Hill Church in Mattoon and Seers See. According to the group’s website, Seers See is a “blog/site meant to teach about the seeing gift, help seers cope with their gift, and to offer guidance to those who parent them, those who are friends with them, and those who pastor them.”

Bradley Reynolds, the former Truett McConnell University vice president who allegedly groomed and digitally raped a student-employee at the Georgia Baptist school, was indicted Monday for lying to police about the relationship.

Reynolds faces three felony counts of “making a false statement” to Sgt. Anthony Sims of the White County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office during a March 1, 2024, interview. The maximum sentence for each count could be five years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which first reported the indictment.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Reynolds, with a bail bond set at $30,000. White County District Attorney Jeff Langley told The Roys Report (TRR) an arrest warrant for Reynolds’s extradition from Texas would be issued if he doesn’t “turn himself in.”

The Vatican’s Dicastery for Clergy has declared that several parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo, New York can remain open after Bishop Michael Fisher ordered their closure amid a diocesan-wide renewal plan. 

Save Our Buffalo Churches, which has advocated against church closure proposals in the diocese’s “Road to Renewal” plan, said in a Dec. 8 Facebook post that the Vatican has revoked the closures of three parishes since November, with a fourth parish receiving a temporary reprieve from the diocese itself. 

The closures and mergers of Our Lady of Peace Parish and Holy Apostles Parish have been revoked by the dicastery, the group said.

The Holy See was one of the strongest promoters and first signatories of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted on Sept. 2, 1990. This convention is the most ratified of all the UN treaties.

Signatories are required to provide periodic reports to the Committee for the Rights of the Child every five years. The Holy See submitted its first report two years late in 1994, and its second report 16 years late in 2011. It has not submitted another report since.

A priest who served at several parishes in central Minnesota is facing felony sexual assault and threats of violence charges.

Father Joseph Herzing was charged in Stearns County Court on Nov. 26. According to the criminal complaint in the case, police began investigating a report of sexual abuse in August of 2024.

Herzing is accused of having an inappropriate intimate relationship with a woman he provided spiritual guidance to over a four-year period beginning in 2018. Court documents allege Herzing physically assaulted the woman, choked her, and threatened to kill her.

St. Cloud Diocese Bishop Patrick Neary immediately place Herzing on administrative leave on Nov. 26 after hearing about the charges. Herzing’s first court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 29.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Archdiocese of New York on Monday announced it will set up a $300 million fund to compensate victims of sexual abuse who have sued the church.

In a statement, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the archdiocese would pay for the fund by reducing its budget and selling off assets, including completing the sale of its former headquarters in Manhattan, with the goal that the fund “can be set aside to provide compensation to survivors of sexual abuse.”

The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to negotiate a settlement to compensate 1,300 people who have accused priests and staff lay members of child sex abuse — and is working to raise $300 million to cover the cost.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans’ yearslong bankruptcy has officially ended.

Judge Meredith Grabill heard from church leaders, sex abuse survivors, and insurance companies over the course of two weeks and formally approved the $230 million settlement on Monday.

Last week testimony wrapped up with Grabill taking the weekend to come to her final decision on the settlement.

Attorneys for the Archdiocese said money for survivors will be ready before Dec. 31.

Nearly 150 parishes and charities will contribute approximately $65 million to the settlement fund for clergy sex abuse survivors.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Archdiocese will pay at least $230 million to hundreds of victims of clergy sexual abuse under a settlement approved Monday by a federal judge that follows years of negotiations.

Prosecutors in the Mexican border state of Coahuila have filed child abuse charges against a priest who is currently living in Texas. Authorities are also working to file more charges in connection with a second victim and believe there may be more.

The issue first came to light late last month when a victim who was 12 at the time of the abuse came forward and filed a complaint with the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office. Former clergy, senior legal figures and safeguarding professionals have told Premier Christian News that, despite the Church of England’s repeated claims to have learned from past safeguarding failures, many survivors who come forward continue to be re-traumatised by the way their cases are handled.

The premises – surrounded by 27 acres of land – has lain empty since 2018 following the resignation of Dr John McAreavey as Catholic Bishop of Dromore.

Two former nuns have been found guilty of physically abusing vulnerable youngsters at children’s homes in Scotland more than 40 years ago.

Carol Buirds, 75, and Eileen McElhinney, 78, caused several children unnecessary suffering and injury at two homes run by the Catholic order the Sisters of Nazareth.

Retired support worker Dorothy Kane was also convicted at Edinburgh Sheriff Court of two charges of using cruel and unnatural treatment towards children.

In 2002, Americans were rocked by a news investigation that exposed widespread sexual abuse of children in one of the country’s largest Roman Catholic dioceses. A survivor of clerical abuse is calling for the Justice Minister to end or limit the use of character references in court cases, particularly in relation to sexual offences against children.

Tony Gribben, who was abused by the Catholic priest Fr Malachy Finegan, highlighted a case where two Catholic priests gave character references to a man convicted of sexual offences against children.

The priests in the Diocese of Dromore provided the references in 2022. The family of one of the victims declined to speak publicly but are understood to have been “incensed” at the move.

New recordings of church officials spurred the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, to file an updated complaint with the Vatican.

Survivors of clergy abuse are calling for an investigation into Pope Leo XIV during his tenure as bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, alleging he played a role in covering up how priests and clerics accused of sexual assault were allowed to continue their roles in the Catholic Church.

Recordings of a meeting from in April between the Rev. Giampiero Gambaro with Ana María Quispe Díaz and others accusing Peruvian clerics of assault revealed the man they accused had confessed to church officials years ago, and in September was granted an “honorable discharge.”

A former Church in Wales bishop is said to have admitted sexually assaulting a teenage boy, according to a report seen by the BBC.

Anthony Pierce, who earlier this year was jailed for historical sexual abuse of another boy, allegedly confessed to the report author what is described as a “criminal offence” while he was a parish priest.

The document was written months before he became Bishop of Swansea and Brecon in 1999 and the church held the report – which Pierce asked a “friend” to write – for 11 years before passing it to police.

Trial dates have been set for a former priest who allegedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in his congregation in 1970.

Constantin Turcoane’s matter appeared in Brandon’s Court of King’s Bench on Tuesday, when his trial dates were set for November 2026.

The 81-year-old used to run the St. Elijah Romanian Orthodox Church in a small Westman community that sits within what is now the RM of Riding Mountain West. The church is now a part of the St. Elijah Romanian Orthodox Pioneer Museum, which is roughly 210 kilometres from Brandon.

In March 2022, a woman in her 60s reported that the priest had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions over a period of two years while she was a parishioner at the church, RCMP said in a news release in August last year.

A Chico pastor has pleaded guilty to child molestation charges.

Roger Scalice, 75, appeared in Butte County Superior Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to molesting a minor under 14-years-old. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Scalice’s charges stem from October, after the Chico Police Department received a report that Scalice had inappropriately touched a minor child with whom he had access for over a year.

Authorities say during the investigation, Scalice admitted to the conduct and was arrested at his home in Chico on October 27.

Ramsey said that because of the conduct’s nature and the prolonged abuse, Scalice was charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child. He now faces up to 16 years in state prison on his plea. A volunteer youth pastor at a church in the Houston area was arrested on suspicion of possessing child sex abuse materials. 

On Nov. 26, Carter August Thomas, a volunteer at Houston’s Second Baptist Church, was taken into custody and charged with one felony count of possessing child pornography.

A volunteer who worked last summer with youth at Houston-based Second Baptist Church has been charged with possessing child sexual abuse material. The arrest marks another controversy to hit the embattled megachurch, which has been accused of stealing members’ voting rights.

Carter Thomas, 27, was arrested Wednesday for the felony, Harris County police announced on Facebook. He was first charged on Nov. 26, but police picked him up on the way to turning himself in a week later on Wednesday, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Police were first tipped off about Thomas by email in August, according to the probable cause records. The individual who tipped off police said that Thomas had admitted to struggling with viewing the materials online.
