Index has reported that the Zagreb Archdiocese reported a priest accused of abusing a minor to the police allegedly only five years after receiving the complaint. This occurred only after Dnevnik.hr sent an inquiry about the case. A minor female person accused the priest of abuse back in 2021. The Archdiocese submitted the report to the Zagreb police only on the 9th of October this year, two days after Dnevnik.hr sent them an inquiry about the entire case. They have refused to answer any further questions about the case.

A survivor of shocking clerical abuse has been awarded more than $2.2 million by a County Court jury, despite a series of contentious claims by the Marist Brothers’ legal team that he lied about his mental health and had the “credibility of a $3 note”.

On Friday the news broke of (yet another) pastor arrested for multiple charges of sexual abuse. Specifically, the pastor of Pleasant View Baptist Church of Waynesburg, Kentucky was charged with sexual abuse, sodomy, and incest.

I have made a decision to share some thoughts about these horrendous sexual abuse cases in churches, because I am in a fairly unique place to comment on what I see happening in places like Pleasant View Baptist.

When Pope Leo XIV met seven survivors of abuse by French clergy in Lourdes, the most important moment of his visit happened away from the crowds and ceremonies. During a private meeting that lasted nearly two hours, he listened to their stories, thanked them for sharing their “painful testimony” and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring such abuse never happens again.

That matters. Survivors who were doubted, silenced, or urged to forgive quickly deserve to be heard without defensiveness. But listening is only the beginning. The value of the meeting will not be measured by the pope’s words in Lourdes. It will be measured by what the Church does afterward.

Bishop planned to move accused to another par­ish before charges

In 2021, a young parish­ioner in the rural middle of the state told a vis­it­ing priest that the Rev. Alan J. Mar­tineau had cul­tiv­ated a spe­cial rela­tion­ship with her and then inap­pro­pri­ately touched her. Begin­ning in 2019, the girl said, Mar­tineau repeatedly hugged, kissed, and touched her. Mar­tineau also exchanged tens of thou­sands of text mes­sages with the girl, invest­ig­at­ors later found.

Noti­fied mul­tiple times, the bishop of the dio­cese, Robert Joseph McManus of Worcester, sought to do what church lead­ers before him had done so often: trans­fer Mar­tineau to another par­ish where he would receive the “tutel­age” of an older priest.

But before that trans­fer occurred, a social worker with the dio­cese decided the alleg­a­tions had become so ser­i­ous that they must be repor­ted to the state, so she called the Depart­ment of Chil­dren and Fam­il­ies.

A 36-year-old pastor wanted in connection with the murder of a four-month-old baby and the alleged rape of her 43-year-old mother has been arrested in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.

The infant’s body was found buried in a shallow grave near the Hennops River earlier this week.

The arrest brings to three the number of suspects in custody, including the pastor’s two wives.

Police say the suspect was arrested in a backroom in Diepsloot informal settlement this afternoon, following an intensive investigation involving detectives and crime Intelligence.

New court documents allege the head pastor at a Duncan Pentecostal church knew about his youth pastor’s inappropriate behavior with young girls years before he was arrested.

Thursday, 27-year-old Andrew Benton was booked into Stephens County Jail on two counts of child sex abuse charges.

He posted his bond and was released hours after he turned himself in.

Benton, according to officials, was the youth pastor at Grace Chapel Pentecostal Church and allegedly used his position to sexually abuse several underage girls. He was also the Youth President for the Assembly of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For one girl, the documents stated the abuse happened from the summer of 2025 to as early as February 2026.

A former Catholic priest was found guilty on Thursday of sexually abusing a student at a Catonsville Catholic school in the 1990s.  

William Mannion Jr. was accused of abusing the student, who was 10 years old when the offenses occurred, the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed to CBS News Baltimore. 

Mannion was found guilty of one count of child sex abuse and four counts of second-degree sex offense.

A 49-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he used social media to pursue a sexual relationship with a teenage girl and then tried to hide the evidence.

Scott Hartman, a former Catholic Foundation executive, was indicted Thursday on three counts of pandering sexually oriented material of a minor, disseminating material harmful to a juvenile, tampering with evidence and grooming.

He will be arraigned in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on Oct. 13.

Hartman was arrested last week by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force after investigators executed a search warrant at his home.

Worcester Bishop Robert J. McManus planned to move the Rev. Alan J. Martineau to another parish after a teenage parishioner accused the priest of inappropriate touching, according to court records The Boston Globe reported Wednesday, Oct. 7.

A diocesan social worker reported the allegations to the state Department of Children and Families before the transfer took effect. Nearly five months passed between the day McManus first heard the accusations and the day the diocese contacted authorities, the Globe found.

Martineau became the only priest prosecuted as a result of Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s investigation into the dioceses of Worcester, Fall River and Springfield. Jared Denney, a former leader at a McCracken County church, appeared Friday before Judge Jenny Hines in McCracken County District Court for arraignment, at which time a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Denney was arrested as a result of an investigation which began in late August, and alleges that Denney, 37, sent sexually explicit messages to a minor.

A youth pastor has been arrested after agents with the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation said he had sexual contact with children.

Officers with the Duncan Police Department asked OSBI to investigate possible child sexual abuse in March 2026. During the investigation, OSBI agents identified 27-year-old Andrew Benton as the suspect.

Benton was serving as the youth president at Assembly of our Lord Jesus Christ and a youth pastor at Grace Chapel Pentecostal Church.

OSBI shared its report of Benton with the Stephens County District Court on August 28, and an arrest warrant was issued on October 6.

Benton turned himself in to police on October 8. Bond was set at $100,000, and he was ordered to have no contact with any minors and to consume no intoxicants.

The Aboriginal community leader describes the Catholic cleric as an “evil predator” and is urging people to call out sex abusers.

An overwhelming majority of Massachusetts voters believe the clock shouldn’t run out for child sex abuse survivors suing their alleged abusers, according to a poll released Thursday.

A longtime former educator at a private school in Shelby County is back in jail after authorities arrested him for the second time on child pornography charges.

Michael Roy Bridges, the 70-year-old former performing arts director who had had also served during his career as an assistant principal at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School, was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Thursday.

Bridges was initially arrested in May 2025 on 13 counts of possession of child sex abuse material.

A former pastor already facing multiple charges involving an alleged juvenile victim has been charged with additional sex crimes after another alleged victim came forward, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.

Legislation to remove the statute of limitations is currently in conference committee

A new poll shows widespread support among for eliminating the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse civil claims in Massachusetts.

The poll, conducted by MassInc, was released on Thursday, by the group Enough Abuse about an amendment, currently in conference committee, to eliminate the statute of limitations and the $20,000 charitable immunity cap for child sexual abuse civil cases.

It would also make the law retroactive, allowing survivors who are currently barred from suing to file claims for two years.

Massachusetts law currently bars child sexual abuse survivors age 53 or over from suing their abusers in civil court, as previously reported by 5 Investigates.

For those who can file claims, liability is capped at $20,000.

A FORMER priest who abused a child at a church in Greenock has died in prison.

Vincent Cassidy, 85, died at HMP Low Moss on October 3.

In April this year, he was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of two charges of indecent assault and one of lewd and libidinous practices.

The offences, which date back to the 1970s, related to two young males, one of whom was 16 at the time, and one who was aged between eight and 12.

Cassidy’s abuse of a child in Greenock involved a number of instances of sexual contact.

He preyed on his second victim at locations including a swimming pool, a beach, and a caravan.

His crimes were also committed at locations in Paisley and Lossiemouth.

Nancy Lescarbeau, 52, facing 8 charges for alleged crimes in 2021, 2022

Ottawa police have charged Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) teacher Nancy Lescarbeau with sexually assaulting a student earlier this decade, among other alleged crimes.

Police said Wednesday morning the eight charges against Lescarbeau, 52, date back to 2021 and 2022.

They include sexual assault, forcible confinement, intimidation by threats of violence, assault with a weapon and sexual interference, which is a charge involving children under age 16.

Lescarbeau was arrested and charged on Wednesday, police confirmed in an email to CBC News. They began investigating allegations last month.

Police said they are concerned there could be other victims and ask people with information to reach out to their Sexual Assault and Child Abuse unit or Crime Stoppers.

The former bishop of Australia’s Broome diocese was sentenced Wednesday to six years and six months in prison for sexually abusing two young Aboriginal men.

Bishop Christopher Saunders, who led the diocese from 1996 until his resignation in 2021, was sentenced Oct. 7 at the District Court of Western Australia.

The 76-year-old will serve at least four years and six months, backdated to Aug. 12, 2026, the date he was convicted and taken into custody. He will become eligible for parole in February 2031, when he will be 81 years old.

Following a three-week trial, a jury found Saunders guilty on 12 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual penetration, arising from incidents between 2008 and 2019. He was found not guilty of six other charges.

Most of the charges reportedly concerned one victim, who was 16 when the sexual contact began and 19 when it ended.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore, one of several Catholic dioceses that downsized parishes after filing for bankruptcy amid sex abuse claims, plans to ordain its largest number of priests in 50 years.

The Catholic Review, the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s official news outlet, reported that Baltimore will ordain 12 men as priests next year, up from five this year and the most since the 1970s.

The number of Baltimore seminarians has grown from 28 in 2007 to 52 in 2020 to 66 this year.

The surge follows years of pain for the archdiocese, which serves more than 500,000 Catholics spread over most of Central and Western Maryland. It also reflects a national trend of increasing enrollment in Catholic seminaries.

A Baltimore County jury Thursday found a former Catonsville priest guilty of one count of child abuse and four counts of second-degree sex offenses in the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old St. Agnes Catholic School student more than three decades ago.

William “Father Bill” Mannion Jr., 64, was accused of grooming the boy in 1994 and using religious teachings and the threat of eternal damnation to manipulate him into performing sexual acts in the church rectory after religious education classes.

The jury reached its verdict Thursday after a four-day trial in Baltimore County Circuit Court. The state dropped the remaining charges against Mannion.

Dates were central to the defense throughout the trial. Defense attorney Chris Luber argued that the former student’s accounts placed the alleged abuse before Mannion arrived at St. Agnes in July 1994.

Advocates are calling for the Catholic Church to defrock the former bishop of Broome.

Christopher Saunders was sentenced to more than six years in prison yesterday for sexually abusing young men while serving in his position.

Co-director of Bishop Accountability in Boston, Anne Barrett Doyle, said Pope Leo had a chance to send a strong message in response.

A former Australian Catholic bishop was sentenced Wednesday to six years and six months in prison for sexually abusing two young Indigenous men.

A District Court of Western Australia state jury convicted Christopher Saunders, 76, in August of 13 out of 19 charges of sexual abuse that occurred between 2008 and 2019 in his sprawling Broome Diocese on the country’s tropical northwest coast.

Saunders will become eligible for parole in February 2031.

Riverside Church Ordered to Pay $11.3 Million to Child Sex Abuse Victim

A former player for the Riverside Church basketball program was awarded $11.3 million by a New York jury Wednesday for the sexual abuse he suffered decades ago as a teenage member of the once-vaunted youth team. 

The plaintiff, identified in court documents by his initials, J.M., testified in state Supreme Court in lower Manhattan last week that he was sexually abused “eight or nine” times in the spring of 1978 by Riverside’s former sports program director, Ernest “Ernie” Lorch.

Fairfield University has agreed to pay $1.1 million to a former Fairfield College Preparatory School student who claimed that he was sexually abused by his teacher more than 20 years ago.

The agreement was reached in August after the student alleged he was abused between 2001 and 2005, according to Mitchell Garabedian, a Boston-based lawyer known for representing victims of sexual abuse.

“By coming forward and reporting the sexual abuse the sexual abuse survivor is a voice for those who cannot come forward yet and is also helping to keep the world safer for children,” Garabedian said Tuesday.

Christian Cashman, the president of Fairfield Prep, confirmed in a statement that a settlement has been reached. He said the private Jesuit school has approached the matter with “careful consideration and attention.”

EAST BROOKFIELD — In 2021,a young parishioner in the rural middle of the state told a visiting priest that the Rev. Alan J. Martineau had cultivated a special relationship with her and then inappropriately touched her. Beginning in 2019, the girl said, Martineau repeatedly hugged, kissed, and touched her. Martineau also exchanged tens of thousands of text messages with the girl, investigators later found.

Notified multiple times, the bishop of the diocese, Robert Joseph McManus of Worcester, sought to do what church leaders before him had done so often: transfer Martineau to another parish where he would receive the “tutelage” of an older priest.

But before that transfer occurred, a social worker with the diocese decided the allegations had become so serious that they must be reported to the state, so she called the Department of Children and Families.

Stephen Lake joins growing list of CofE bishops embroiled in scandal

The bishop of Salisbury Stephen Lake has been suspended by the Church of England as safeguarding complaints against him proceed.

Lake is the next bishop in line to take an ex officio seat in the House of Lords. The Church says he will not to be introduced into the Lords while he “remains subject to a complaint under a statutory process”.

Details of the safeguarding complaints have not been made public, except that they allegedly do not involve children.

Lake had already stepped back from his role in April while he was being investigated for alleged financial misconduct. He had also been a trustee of the Church Commissioners, which manage the CofE’s £11.1bn endowment.

Federal probation officers found themselves in unincorporated St. Louis County last month, where convicted sex offender and former priest William F. Vatterott lives. It started with Vatterott’s simple reported failure to report a work mobile phone.

A federal lawsuit has been filed against a Round Rock church whose former pastor was sentenced for possession of child pornography.

Faith Baptist Church pastor David Lloyd Walther was arrested in 2022 after law enforcement found two large computer hard drives containing more than 100,000 images and more than 5,000 videos of child pornography. Law enforcement officials found images of child sexual abuse connected to the church’s IP address and the BitTorrent network.

The lawsuit was filed against Walther earlier this year by 14 adults who say they were sexually abused as children and that their abuse was depicted in images of child pornography he possessed.

The Bishop of Raphoe, Niall Coll, has said that the guilty plea by disgraced priest Fr Edward Gallagher to over 100 charges relating to the sexual abuse of children will be felt across Donegal.

Fr Gallagher was the curate for the Camus, Clonleigh and Leckpatrick parishes, which include St Patrick’s Church in Murlog, Lifford at the time of his arrest in April 2025.

He had previously served in the Moville parish, but has been suspended from ministry since his arrest.

A woman claims ex-Green teacher Gary Huff sexually abused her in the late 1990s when she was a teen, coming forward just before the statute of limitations expired.

A former Green Middle School teacher has been arrested and charged with rape and sexual battery after a woman came forward decades after she says the alleged abuse began.

Gary Huff, who retired from the Green Local Schools in 2017, was arrested this week. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says a woman came forward last October, when she was 42 years old, and reported alleged sexual abuse that she said began when she was 13.

Complaints filed by two adults alleged ‘conduct unbecoming to the episcopal office.’

The upheaval in the Argentine episcopate continued last Friday with the removal of an auxiliary bishop of Córdoba from his offices weeks before Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit the city.

The Archdiocese of Córdoba announced Oct. 2 that Bishop Ricardo Seirutti had been removed from his offices as auxiliary bishop and vicar general following a canonical judicial process ordered by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and conducted by the Interdiocesan Tribunal of Buenos Aires.

“The case was initiated following complaints filed by two adults who alleged that he had engaged in conduct unbecoming to his episcopal office,” said the archdiocese, which is preparing to host Pope Leo Nov. 10.

The recent release of an explosive state report about clergy sexual abuse of children is stirring up old pain for people like 67-year-old Edna Wallace.

Wallace is one of at least 216 people claiming they survived sexual abuse by a cleric in the Diocese of Worcester. She wishes the diocese would accept more accountability.

A federal judge has rejected the Oakland Catholic Diocese’s fourth bankruptcy plan, finding that its case for special treatment and some financial estimates fell short, sending the diocese and sexual abuse survivors back to negotiations.

In his 109-page decision Friday, US Bankruptcy Judge William J. Lafferty rejected the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland’s latest proposal for resolving hundreds of sexual abuse claims, ruling that the diocese had not made the case for approval. As the Chronicle reports, the plan was opposed by a nine-member committee representing abuse survivors, who argued that the diocese had undervalued its property and other assets.

Lafferty specifically rejected the diocese’s argument that its status as a religious institution warranted special consideration in the bankruptcy process. He said the church was not entitled to be treated “differently or more leniently” than another nonprofit or business going through bankruptcy.

The prosecution and defense laid the groundwork Wednesday in the sexual abuse case against Gary ‘Tom’ Keesee Jr.

A western Kentucky man is accused of grooming a 15-year-old girl while he was a church youth pastor and leader.

Jared Denney, 37, of McCracken County, was arrested for felony grooming, felony procuring or promoting the use of minor by electronic means and misdemeanor distribution of obscene matter to minors – first offense.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, detectives have been investigating the allegations starting at the end of August and through Friday, October 2.

They say a man, identified as Denney, allegedly sent sexually explicit messages to the juvenile.

After releasing a damning report last week on a yearslong investigation into sex abuse at three Catholic dioceses in Massachusetts, Attorney General Andrea Campbell called for lawmakers to take specific actions. Her office recommended ending the statute of limitations for civil child sexual abuse claims and eliminating the $20,000 cap on how much nonprofit charities like the dioceses can be forced to pay in damages.

(CN) — A California court of appeal ruled Monday that liability in childhood sexual abuse cases revived by a 2019 law is still subject to a 1986 ballot measure that limited noneconomic damages.

“The Legislature undoubtedly intended to give childhood sexual abuse survivors a chance to pursue claims they may have understandably been reluctant to pursue, or could not pursue, when they were younger,” Baker wrote. “But we see no persuasive evidence of a legislative intent to require the revived claims to proceed as if the law were trapped in 1986 amber,” wrote Associate Justice Lamar Baker in the opinion.

The new Catholic Bishop of Derry Michael Router has vowed that the diocese will ‘move immediately to seek the most serious penalty available under Church law’ for paedophile priest Fr Edward Gallagher.

The Bishop was reacting after the disgraced priest pleaded guilty to 109 sex offences at Derry Crown Court on Monday. Gallagher will be sentenced in December.

Speaking after the hearing, Bishop Router said his thoughts were first and foremost ‘with all those who have been affected by the case involving Father Edward Gallagher’, and ‘particularly the children who have suffered harm and those who continue to live with the consequences of abuse and exploitation’.

“The events of the past 18 months have caused immense distress to victims and survivors of abuse, parishioners, families, clergy and the wider community,” Bishop Router said.

Edward Gallagher, 59, will be sentenced in December

A priest has pleaded guilty to 109 sex offences at Londonderry Crown Court.

Edward Gallagher, 59, whose address is Maghaberry Prison, will be sentenced in December for offences between 22 June 2023 and 18 April 2025.

They include among others attempted sexual communication with a child under 16, having indecent images of a child, possessing an extreme pornographic image and attempting to encourage a child to engage in sexual activity.

The Catholic Bishop of Derry Michael Router confirmed that he would ask the Vatican to dismiss Gallagher from the priesthood.

When the charges were put to him Gallagher pleaded guilty to them all.

Defence counsel Stephen Mooney said that a pre-sentence report was needed and that “the facts are what they are”.

Gallagher remains in custody pending sentencing on 9 December.

A federal judge has rejected a bankruptcy plan put forward by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland more than three years after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in response to a wave of sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. 

In a 109-page decision on Friday, Judge William J. Lafferty dismissed several of the diocese’s arguments in favor of the plan, including that it should be granted special consideration in the bankruptcy proceedings because of its status as a religious institution. The plan was opposed by the nine-member committee representing the abuse survivors who argued that the diocese had underestimated the value of its assets — including churches, cemeteries and other properties across the East Bay.

In the detailed written instructions given to the young women who worked without pay in the then-Reverend Chris Brain’s house, there was a revealing demand.

The homebase team, as they were known, were to “do anything” the Church of England priest asked of them.

Routine tasks – assigned on a rota 24 hours a day, seven days a week – included cooking, cleaning, ironing, shopping, looking after Brain’s young daughter, and walking his dog.

Angry residents gathered outside an Anglican church on Sunday, demanding the removal of a priest accused of sexually assaulting minors.

Angry community members stormed into a local Anglican church in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, demanding the immediate removal of a priest accused of sexually assaulting seven minors.

The residents want the Anglican priest expelled from the parish and stripped of his duties following allegations that have emerged from families of the alleged victims.

The allegations came to light after one of the alleged victims spoke out, prompting other families to come forward with similar claims.

Three cases have been opened at the Mountain Rise police station, with more expected to be opened this week as the allegations continue to emerge.

Christopher Brain, who founded Nine O’Clock Service, ‘dominated and abused his position’ to sexually assault a ‘staggering number of women’

A former Church of England priest who established a cult-like movement has been found guilty of rape and four charges of indecent assault against four women.

Chris Brain, 69, who founded the Nine O’Clock Service, known as NOS, was convicted last year of 17 charges of indecent assault against nine women followers. He was found not guilty of another 15 charges of indecent assault.

Brain has now been found guilty of one count of rape and four counts of indecent assault after a retrial.

The verdicts mean Brain, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, has been convicted of 22 sexual offences against 13 women between 1986 and 1995. He was remanded in custody for sentencing at a later date.

A victim of a former Church of England priest who was found guilty of rape and four indecent assaults has said the Church “should have been in the dock” with him during his retrial.

Christopher Brain, 69, used a “culture of fear” to sexually abuse women while leader of Christian movement the Nine O’Clock Service (NOS).

He wielded great power as the head of the Sheffield-based evangelical movement, a part of the Church of England, between 1986 and 1995.

Brain, a former member of Christian rock group Present Tense, surrounded himself with young women dressed in lycra and lingerie, and abused his status to sexually abuse victims who had joined what prosecutors say was effectively a “cult”.

Last August, Brain was convicted by a jury at Inner London Crown Court of 17 counts of indecent assault against nine women.

The Alberta government and Anglican Church have admitted liability for sexual assaults allegedly perpetrated by a late priest who worked at an Edmonton youth jail, but a lawyer for the survivors says both are dragging their feet on compensation.

Last week, representatives for the church and provincial government were in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench for a brief hearing, where they accepted vicarious liability the actions of the late Gordon William Dominey, a priest accused of sexually abusing children incarcerated at the Edmonton Youth Development Centre between 1985 and 1990.

Dominey was initially charged in 2016 with historic sex abuse at the since-demolished centre. At its peak, the criminal case against him included 15 complainants and more than 30 criminal charges.

SOMERSET, Ky. (WYMT) – A Southern Kentucky pastor was arrested on sex-related charges.

Pulaski County Sheriff Bobby Jones announced the arrest of Scott C. Hughes, 54, of Somerset, following an investigation into allegations of sexual offenses involving minors.

Investigation details

The investigation is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

Crimes Against Children Detective Jay Picard received information concerning alleged sexual contact involving Hughes and people who were minors at the time of the alleged offenses. The allegations involve conduct occurring in Pulaski County beginning in 2018.

Arrest and charges

Hughes was arrested at his home Thursday night without incident.

He has been charged with Sodomy in the Second Degree, Sodomy in the Third Degree, Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, and other offenses.

Hughes was taken to the Pulaski County Detention Center and has a $75,000 bond.

For years, Worcester Bishop Robert McManus has balked at disclosing the names of all the priests in his diocese who had been credibly accused of abusing children, standing alone in opposition among the state’s four Catholic leaders.

Now, McManus is under pressure to publicly release the names of every accused priest following a withering state report this week on sexual abuse by hundreds of Catholic clergy in Massachusetts.

Two years after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington is pulling out of the reorganization process, citing mounting legal costs, prolonged negotiations, and the lack of a settlement and outcome for claimants who have accused Catholic clergy of sexual abuse. Since filing two years ago, the Vermont Catholic Church’s bankruptcy has developed into multiple overlapping legal battles that could have ramifications across the state for the church’s faithful.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Bishop John McDermott announced that the diocese has filed a motion seeking to exit Chapter 11 with the intention to have a hearing near the end of 2026. Some of the first evidence that the Roman Catholic Church faced a clergy abuse scandal took place during the 1990s in North Attleboro with the case of Father James Porter.

The depth of that abuse came more fully to light Wednesday as the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office released the results of a long-awaited investigation into three of the state’s dioceses: Fall River, Worcester and Springfield.

Scott Hartman, 49, faces charges including grooming, pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and pandering obscenity involving a minor, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and court documents.

Hartman was arrested by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force after investigators executed a search warrant at his home.

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office identified 11 clergy members and church workers linked to abuse cases in the Worcester Diocese in a report released Wednesday, even as the diocese refuses to publish a comprehensive list of the accused clergy.

The names of the clergy members were included in a report by the Attorney General’s Office following a multi-year investigation into the Worcester, Springfield and Fall River Dioceses.

BOSTON — Massachusetts officials on Wednesday released the final report from a long investigation of child sexual abuse across three Catholic Dioceses.

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s investigation covered the Dioceses of Worcester, Springfield and Fall River. It does not include the Archdiocese of Boston, which was the subject of a 91-page report issued by the office in 2003.

Work on the new report began in 2019, under then-Attorney General Maura Healey, who is now governor. Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office released the findings.

According to a summary issued by Campbell’s office, findings include that “more than 270 Catholic clerics abused nearly 1,000 children across the three dioceses.”

Attorney General Andrea Campbell said the results of her office’s investigation into sex abuse by clergy in three Massachusetts dioceses are reason enough for state lawmakers to pass reforms that would eliminate the civil statute of limitations for child sex abuse victims.

Advocates and survivors have been looking for these reforms for more than a decade, and now, a bill that would make them law is closer to being passed than ever before. They’re being negotiated now in a Legislative conference committee as part of a broader bill on primary care.

CINCINNATI — In the wake of the Catholic Church abuse scandal in 2002, roughly 400 people in Southwest Ohio came forward to report being sexually molested by priests during their childhood.

Almost 200 of them filed lawsuits, mostly in Hamilton County, but judges dismissed them one by one, without anyone coming to the courthouse or any evidence being presented, because according to state law, they were simply too old to proceed.

But their resurrection may be coming.

When David Lewcon learned that the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office finished its investigation into the Worcester Diocese, he felt both relieved and doubtful.

In 2019, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation into the Worcester, Springfield and Fall River Dioceses. Seven years later, on Wednesday, the office released its report, finding that over 200 members of the clergy abused over 1,000 children throughout the three dioceses over the span of a century.

Lewcon, 72, was one of those children, being abused by a Worcester Diocese priest at the St. Mary Church in Uxbridge during the 1970s.

The survivor told MassLive on Thursday he is thankful that the investigation has wrapped up after such a long time and said that action must be taken to hold abusers accountable.

Whether Lewcon thinks those actions will actually materialize is a different story.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Attorneys representing sexual abuse survivors are vowing to fight a sudden move by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington on Wednesday to dismiss its two-year-old bankruptcy case, calling it an effort to avoid fair compensation.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington filed for bankruptcy to liquidate assets and help pay off settlements with sexual abuse survivors in 2024. Two years after filing, they are now trying to dismiss their own bankruptcy case.

Attorneys representing survivors call it a bad-faith move to dodge accountability. “The diocese made the choice to file for bankruptcy two years ago.
